Frank Mir defeated the inexperienced Lesnar the first time these two faced each other at UFC 81, but it was anything but easy. Brock Lesnar dominated the fight decimating Mir’s face with violent hammer strikes from the mount position. Inexplicably, referee Steve Mazzagatti stood the fight up due to strikes to the back of Mir’s head. Mazzagatti’s call was easily one of the worst in the history of the sport as he also deducted a point. Incredibly, all of this happened in the first 35 seconds of the fight. The fight progressed and within seconds Lesnar pounced again and proceeded to dominate with ground and pound. Mir used one of the best guards in MMA to survive and force Lesnar to his feet. Brock, while on his feet, controlled each of Mir’s legs while trying to pass guard. Mir used his left leg to grab Brock’s right leg and bam, over in seconds with Brock tapping out 1:37 into the 1 st round due to a Ankle Lock. Since that fight, Lesnar pummeled Heath Herring’s face into the size of a watermelon, which might have been an improvement, cruising to an impressive victory. Lesnar then took on one of the greatest in the history of the sport, Randy Couture, for the interim UFC Heavyweight Title. Lesnar again appeared to be more patient as he landed a crushing right hand to Couture’s temple and then finished the fight with several hammer strikes until the referee stopped the bout. Mir has only fought once since the Lesnar bout as he coached against Antonio “Minotauro” Nogueira in season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter. Mir fought Noguiera at UFC 92 for the right to face Lesnar for the title. Mir, shockingly, kept the fight in the stand up and picked Minotauro apart. Mir has overcome a serious motorcycle injury and climbed back to the upper echelon of the heavyweight division. Now his goal is clear, become the Heavyweight Champion once again.

Georges St. Pierre is simply one of the greatest pound for pound mixed-martial artists in the world. His athleticism is unmatched and his skill set has dramatically improved over the course of his career. He can dominate from his feet and on the ground. GSP is coming off of an impressive victory over BJ Penn and hasn’t lost since April of 2007 to Matt Serra at UFC 69. Thiago Alves hasn’t lost since June of 2006 at The Ultimate Fight Night 5 when he lost to Jon Fitch. Alves has run off 7 consecutive wins that includes the likes of Chris Lytle, Karo Parisyan, Matt Hughes and Josh Koscheck. This is a great matchup with the power of Alves vs. the speed and grace of GSP.

Prediction: GSP has proven he can wins fights no matter the style. He has won with wrestling against the likes of Hughes & Koscheck, in the guard of the great BJ Penn and on his feet defeated Jon Fitch. Alves could be one of his greatest tasks but in typical GSP fashion, he dominates the fight and wins late in the 3rd round via tap out due to a Rear Naked Choke.

Dan Henderson is one of the greatest the sport has ever seen. Henderson held both the Light Heavyweight and Middleweight Title in the Pride Fighting Championship. In the UFC, he has lost a title shot against Rampage Jackson at 205 lbs and a shot at the Middleweight Title against Anderson Silva. Henderson defeated the young and impressive Rousimar Pahlares at UFC 88 and legend Rich Franklin at UFC 93. Michael Bisping made the drop from Light Heavyweight to Middleweight after a loss to former Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans. Bisping thought he would be more effective and stronger cutting weight. Now, the true test comes in the form of Dan Henderson. Bisping is very effective on his feet with very good boxing skills. During The Ultimate Fighter Season 9, Henderson was very low key while Bisping was the trash talker. As much as their personalities are different, so are their fighting styles.

Prediction: The classic wrestler vs. striker has another layer in this bout. Dan Henderson can strike as well plus he has a chin made out of cast iron. Henderson’s grit and wrestling skills will prove to be the difference as he dominates all three rounds cruising to victory via a unanimous decision. Hopefully, Bisping brings the singing Brits to Las Vegas in the style of boxer, Ricky Hatton.

Jon Fitch just plugs along in an unassuming fashion getting little or no credit along the way. Yet, Fitch is 18-3 and 9-1 in the UFC including an 8 fight winning streak. His only lost in the UFC was a loss to GSP via a Unanimous Decision at UFC 87. Paulo Thiago doesn’t look like a fighter, but is 11-0 and 1-0 in the UFC. Thiago appeared to be an appetizer for Josh Koscheck but surprised the wiley veteran with wicked shots in his 1st round victory.

Prediction: Jon Fitch loves to slug it out and has one of the best chins in the sport. Thiago is known for his ground game but annihilated Koscheck with wicked strikes. This is an interesting matchup as both fighters try to get a shot at the Welterweight Title. Fitch’s ability to strike and take punches will be the difference as he gains a victory via TKO in the 2nd round.

Akiyama makes his much anticipated debut in the UFC after an impressive run in Dream and K-1. Belcher has plenty of Octagon experience holding a 5-3 record in the UFC. Belcher is very aggressive and equally talented on his feet and on the ground. Yoshihiro hasn’t lost since 2005. He brings very good footwork, a good submission game and explosive hands to the cage.

Prediction: Akiyama’s all around game and explosiveness will be too much for Belcher. However will do something Akiyama is not use to, take the fight into the 2nd round. Akiyama wins via arm bar in the 2nd round.

Dollaway, a collegiate wrestler at Arizona State, brings a wealth of potential to the Octagon. After losing to Amir Sadolah at The Ultimate Fighter Season 7 finale, Dollaway defeated Jesse Taylor and Mike Massenzio. Lawlor, a veteran of season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter, will attempt to keep the fight on the ground against the tough wrestler. Lawlor lost on The Ultimate Fighter to Dollaway’s teammate, Ryan Bader.

Prediction: Lawlor will find the same fate against Dollaway that he did against Bader, a submission loss. This time it will be via an arm bar in the 2nd round.

Jon “Bones” Jones burst on the UFC scene with a dominating performance against Stephan Bonnar moving his UFC record to 2-0 in the Octagon. Jones is an incredible story, his first pro fight was in April of 2008, he then fought 5 more times before making his UFC debut in August of 2008. Jake O’Brien, 4-2 in the UFC, will bring his extensive wrestling skills into the Octagon. Jake has competed in the heavyweight division competing against the likes of Cain Velasquez, Andrei Arlovski and Heath Herring.

Prediction: Bones Jones’ agility and balance were incredible in the Bonnar fight. Make no mistake, O’Brien is far from Bonnar. O’Brien will push the pace and attempt to take the fight to the ground. Jones will want the fight to take place on his feet. A very close fight will end with Bones Jones getting his 1 st lost via Unanimous Decision.

The winner of Ultimate Fighter Season 6, Mac Danzig is coming off consecutive losses to Clay Guida and Josh Neer dropping his UFC record to 2-2. Danzig has been somewhat disappointing since entering the Octagon. Jim Miller, 2-1 in the UFC, is coming off a tough loss to Gray Maynard at UFC 96. Miller has won 9 of his 13 victories via submission.

Prediction: Miller will attempt to get the fight to the ground while Danzig will attempt to create distance. This is a close fight to call but Miller will gain the victory via submission due to a Rear Naked Choke in the 3rd round.

UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman made the drop from heavyweight to light heavyweight at UFC 93 where he lost to Shogun Rua. Coleman looked very tired in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. The weight cut combined with Coleman’s age proved to be too much for the former Ohio State Wrestling All-American. Stephan Bonnar was completely dominated in his last bout by relatively unknown Jon “Bones” Jones at UFC 94. Bonnar, a crowd favorite, was out of commission for over a year prior to the Jones fight. No doubt the Las Vegas crowd will be looking for the return of the old American Psycho.

Prediction: A loss by Bonnar would almost certainly end his UFC career. Coleman’s return to the UFC was a surprise to many but the drop to 205 lbs was even a bigger surprise. Bonnar’s conditioning will be the difference as he gets back to the center of the Octagon with Joe Rogan.

UFC 99 will take place on Saturday in Cologne Germany featuring Rich Franklin facing Wanderlei Silva at a 195 pound catch weight in the main event. Both fighters rank in near the top in their weight classes according to the MMA rankings, so this promises to be a great matchup. A battle between two all time greats should be an exciting fight for the German crowd. Both fighters are famous for the explosive striking games. Rich Franklin is more of a polished fighter under the tutelage of boxing coach Rob Radford. Silva is wild with his punches throwing from all angles and levels. Silva’s footwork will never be used in an instructional videos but he still generates extreme power with his hands. Franklin prepared for Wand’s unorthodox style with Anderson Silva (reported here 1st, for pictures of the training session click here). Wanderlei (32-9-1), during his Pride Fighting days was as popular as any Mixed-martial artist in the world.

Silva is only 32 years old but has taken some shots over his 13 year career. Silva always brings an aggressive style to the cage and his willing to slug it out with anyone including much heavier opponents. Wand slugged it out with the likes of 250 lb Mark Hunt, 240 lb Kazuyuki Fujita and 220 lb Mirko Cro Cop. Many pundits have called Wanderlei’s chin into question claiming the battles against the heavier fighters have aged the fighter well beyond his 32 years. Silva, although lacking the explosiveness that made him famous, is still a very dangerous fighter with one punch power. Silva needs a victory here to continue his quest to get a UFC title shot.

Rich Franklin holds a career record of 24-4 including victories over Evan Tanner, Ken Shamrock and Nate Quarry. Franklin’s four losses were against the best of the best; Anderson Silva (twice), Dan Henderson and undefeated Lyoto Machida. After losing to Machida at the Inoki Festival in 2003, Rich went on an 8 fight winning streak which ended at the hands of Anderson Silva at UFC 64 in October of 2006. Franklin was the favorite coming into the bout but was dominated at the hands of Silva’s Muay Thai clinch. Rich bounced back with victories over Jason MacDonald and the impressive Yushin Okami. The victories set up the rematch with Silva at UFC 77 in Franklin’s hometown of Cincinnati, OH. Franklin worked hard in camp to devise a plan to combat the Thai clinch and felt good entering the rematch. Early on Franklin looked good but took some significant shots at the end of the 1st round. Rich was dazed and confused but came out for the 2nd round. Silva’s knees proved to be too much as he cruised to a 2nd round victory via TKO. The loss placed Franklin’s career in limbo. The UFC was not interested in a 3rd contest between Franklin and Silva. Since then, Rich has competed at 185, 205, and a catch weight of 195 lbs.
