Strikeforce Results: Frank Shamrock vs Nick Diaz

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Frank Shamrock faces Nick Diaz in the main event for Strikeforce tonight. The bad boy Diaz is a former WEC Welterweright Champion as he faces a legend of modern Mixed Martial Arts, the former UFC Middleweight Champion Frank Shamrock. With 15,211 in attendance, both had a significant following in the crowd.

Round 1 - Diaz mounts Shamrock early as the fight goes to the ground with Diaz in control until a Shamrock reversal near the midway point of the round. The fighters retrurn to their feet as Shamrock keeps the fight moving as he lands ocassional kicks and punches and the left-handed Diaz continues to stalk him. With under a minute remaining Diaz mounts Shamrock as the fight goes to the ground and Diaz land several punches with his ground and pound. While few were direct and solid hits to Shamrock’s head, damage was done as Frank had some blood between rounds.

Round 2 - Diaz can be seen talking tash with the fight underway. Shamrock continues to stay low and try to box Diaz much to the dismay of announcer Pat Miletich. Shamrock connects on a solid right with #:06 remaining in the round, but Diaz continues to land jabs, hooks and uppercuts causing blood from Shamrock’s nose. The seemingly bigger Diaz continues to control the round pinning Shamrock against the fence and landing more forceful punches and a kick as we head under 2 minutes remaining. Obviously bleeding bad and hurt, Diaz senses this and continues to pour on a flurry of punches as Shamrock eats about 15-20 seconds of continuos punches before the fight is finally called.

Strikeforce Results: Chris Cyborg vs Hitomi Akano

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

The drama around this one was Chris Cyborg weighing in at 150 pounds, 7 pounds overweight. In the end it probably did not matter and you will read more about why it seemed insignificant below. On the line is a likely fight with women’s MMA icon Gina Carano to the winner of this fight.

Round 1 - The first round featured complete domination by Cyborg as Akano looks ot have nothing but submission skills. Akano’s standup appears quite weak and she obviously wants the fight to go to the ground, but Cybord walks away forcing them to stay on their feet.

Round 2 - More domination by Cyborg including a nice knee to Akano’s face and takedown halfway through the round. Akano ties to avoid Cyborg’s ground and pound but takes several shots. The round ends with Cyborg winning another round.

Round 3 - Akano falls to the ground looking to force the fight to the mat, but Cyborg does not allow it and it’s obvious why. Cyborg lands a tough right hand and then a knee then finishes a stunned Akano off for the victory.

It seems very likely that Chris Cyborg (7-1) will get Gina Carano next in what could be the biggest fight in the history of women’s Mixed Martial Arts.

Strikeforce Results: Brett Roger vs Abongo Humphrey

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Strikeforce: Shamrock vs Diaz is underway on Showtime and the Strikeforce results from the April 11 event are posted over at ProFighting-fans.com. The first fight of the televised broadcast features two undefeated fighters in Brett Roger (8-0) vs Abongo Humphrey (12-0). Whose “O” will go?

Round 1 - In a very fast-paced round, the two exchange shots with Humphrey nearly landing a viscious kick to the head and Roger utilizing his Muay Thai clinch to land shots to Humphrey’s face. However, contorversy ensued as referee Herb Dean had to stop the fight three times as Roger was grabbing Humphrey’s dreadlocks to hold onto his head with the final stoppage resulting in a 1-point deduction for Roger. While Roger seemed to have the advantage in the round, the point deduction would have likely made it 9-9 on the scorecards.

Round 2 - It did not take long for Roger to take the fight over landing several knees to the face of Humphrey to get the TKO victory at 1:38 of Round 2.

Brett Roger improves to 9-0 while Abongo Humphrey suffers his first loss as a professional to fall to 12-1 as the fight ends exactly how Scott Dryden picked it in his Strikeforce: Shamrock vs Diaz preview.

The victory over Masvidal capped off an eight fight win streak for Damm, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist who has produced submissions in five of his eight career wins. Damm has been fighting professionally for five years.

Thomson sustained a broken leg last week while sparring and was forced to withdraw from his rematch with Melendez.  Thomson won the title in his initial encounter with Melendez, a five-round, non-stop-action battle via unanimous decision at the HP Pavilion on June 27, 2008.  Thomson underwent surgery shortly after the break occurred.  His estimated recovery time has not been determined.

The 26-year-old Melendez, an expert in both Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is looking to return to the win column after his last start, the loss to Thomson.  A resident of San Francisco, Melendez went unbeaten in his first 13 professional appearances, a run that catapulted him into the world top 10 rankings.
