MAC teams perform well in non conference games

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

Out of conference play is always a key indicator of the strength of a conference, and the Mid-American Conference scored a strong opening weekend showing. Against I-AA/FCS teams the MAC went 3-0 with Toledo, Central Michigan and Temple each scoring convincing wins and Eastern Michigan still to play on Sunday. In games against non-BCS opponents, MAC teams scored another perfect 3-0 mark including a 2-0 mark against the WAC. Northern Illinois easily handled Army 49-26 while Bowling Green and Ohio scored road wins with BG winning at Idaho 32-15, and the Bobcats winning at New Mexico State 44-24.

In games against BCS conference opponents, the stunner of the weekend was Ball State, a team picked in the middle to lower half of the MAC West. The Cardinals hosted in-state rival Indiana and handed the Hoosiers an opening week loss 27-20, their first win over a BCS program since the days of Nate Davis at QB. While Western Michigan, Kent State, Akron and Buffalo were rather easily handled by their BCS opponents, the Miami RedHawks gave Missouri quite a test in Columbia, MO, in a 17-6 Mizzou win.

Overall, with perennial bottom dweller Eastern Michigan still to play, MAC teams are 7-5 in the opening weekend with a week two schedule that features four games with BCS conference opponents and the first conference game of the year as Akron hosts Temple in a MAC East battle.
