Zips and Zags face off in NCAA Tournament
Thursday, March 19th, 2009The first round of the NCAA Tournament is underway with the days games in the books, and we have reached the evening games featuring the #13 Akron Zips facing the #4 Gonzaga Bulldogs in Portland, Oregon. The Zips, 23-12, come in as the underdog and look to become the first MAC team since 2001 to win a NCAA Tournament game. This appearance for Keith Dambrot’s Zips is Akron’s first since Bobby Huggins led the 1986 Zips to the Big Dance.
For Gonzaga the history, and especially the recent history, is much more positive. Gonzaga is making thier 11th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance after starting their run over a decade ago as a “mid-major” and building their program into a legitimate contender each year. At 26-5 this season, the Bulldogs went 14-0 in the West Coast Conference.
