MAC Women’s Basketball Tournament update

While the MAC men’s basketball tournament garners most of the attention from the media, let us not forget about the fine MAC women’s basketball teams. After playing on Sunday and then Tuesday, the ladies are back in action today in the semifinals. In the first game, Miami (22-10) topped Toledo (14-16) by a score of 70-66.

We arrived at the second game between Ohio and Bowling Green just before tip-off. The Falcons came in heavy favorites, but Ohio has been in the lead the entire game. The Bobcats have led by as many as 13 at 30-17, but BG ended the half on a 8-0 run to pull to within 5. Ohio held onto the lead until about the 12 minute mark as BG tied the score at 38 before taking a 40-38 lead. The crowd and momentum is now firmly on Bowling Green’s side with under 11 minutes to play and BG up 2.

7:58 2nd half - Another BG bucket would have been enough to seal it IMO, but the Bobcats got the ball back, down 47-40.

4:51 - Butler at the line for Ohio as the Bobcats are on a 6-0 run to make it 47-46 BG. Butler misses the first and tied it making the second FT.

3:50 - A jump ball brings us to the 4 minute media timeout. I’d love to give you game stats, but for some reason 1,000+ visitors/day during the MAC Tournament does not earn the right to receiving stats during the game. Ohio has the ball with BG leading 49-47.

1:45 - Ohio has missed shots close to the basket on consecutive possesstions as BG leads 52-49.

1:17 - Ohio steal gives the Bobcats possession and a BG foul has Ohio at the line, down 3. First FT good, 2nd shot good as well. Bowling Green lead 52-51 with 1:17 remaining.

50.6 seconds left - Ohio timeout after yet another jump ball, BG up 52-51. Ohio has 26 seconds left on the shot clock, so BG should get a chance at it should Ohio score.

43.3 - Ohio at the line after BG’s 9th foul of the half. Ohio has been whistled for 4 fouls. Hits 1 of 2, tied game.

14.9 - Timeout BG with the ball and a chance to win. Kate Achter has fouled out of the game for BG, so BG’s #1 scoring option will not be a factor.

End of Regulation - Fantastic game so far, but now the fans get more for their money. A thilling ending saw BG miss a hot in the paint, Ohio get the rebound and a good look at a potential game-winner that did not fall. We’re tied at 52 at the beginning of overtime.

3:10 OT - BG scores 6 straight to start the overtime period and now leads 58-52.

1:10 OT - Quintana Ward hits a jumper in the lane to cut the BG lead to 2 at 58-56. Ohio seems to claw back every time it looks like BGSU will seal the deal.

7.7 seconds left in OT - BG heading to the line after a Ohio 3-point play by Lauren Hmiel put the Bobcats on top. The foul on Ohio was Jennifer Poff’s 5th.

7.7 OT - Tracy Pontius at the line, missed the first FT. Pontius’ shot is good on the second shot to tie the game at 59, Ohio ball with 7.7 seconds left in OT #1.
