2012 starts with rough week one for MAC schools
The 2012 college football season kicked off this past weekend with all 13 MAC football teams in action. With a single conference game on the slate along with 11 non-conference games. While several games featured very tough match-ups for the conference including eight games against Football Bowl Subdivision BCS conference schools, MAC schools were able to muster only a single win in those games. Leading the way was Frank Solich’s Ohio Bobcats squad, winners at Penn State by a final score of 24-14 and cementing themselves as one of the favorites to win the MAC Championship Game at the end of the year.
Overall the wins and losses break down like this - the conference went 2-0 against FCS/Division I-AA schools with Kent State and Central Michigan scoring convincing wins. In the lone conference game Ball State topped Eastern Michigan 37-26 holding off a late rally from the Eagles. Against the Big Ten the MAC scored a 1-3 mark with losses to PAC 12, Big East, SEC and Conference USA schools. In the end the conference’s rough week was just a game different than predicted by Nick at VanDelay Sports. His well-known Nick’s Picks column of weekly MAC football picks saw Nick choose correctly on 11 of 12 games with only his WMU upset of Illinois being incorrect in Week #1.
