Optimism abound for SMU football in 2008

by @ 7:46 am. Filed under C-USA Football

It’s been a long, tough road for SMU fans. For years they have suffered after their “death penalty,” but fans of Southern Methodist University once again have hope. 2006 gave fans reasons to believe as the Mustangs finished the year 6-6 and 4-4 in C-USA play. But 2007 was a step in the wrong direction as SMU went just 1-11 and 0-8 in Conference USA. While many of 2007’s losses were close ones, this step back meant changes were needed, and the Mustangs proceeded to bring in possibly the most highly-coveted head coach in the college game in June Jones from Hawaii. Coming off a 12-1 season @ Hawaii where he lead the Warriors to a Sugar Bowl berth, Jones received quite an offer to come to SMU and brings hopes of better days with him.

In CUSA Fans’ SMU Correspondent Rick Atkinson’s 2008 SMU football preview, he shows why SMU fans across the nation are excited once again about SMU football. We encourage you to check it out and let us know how you feel by leaving a comment.

by @ 2:04 pm. Filed under C-USA Football

It’s halftime in Florida and the UCF knights lead the Tulsa Golden Hurricane by a score of 31-23. This game has proven to be the offensive battle we expected in the 2007 Conference USA Championship preview @ CUSA-fans.com.

While Tulsa QB Paul Smith has 278 yards and 3 TD passing in the first half, it’s UCF’s great RB Kevin Smith’s 161 yards rushing with 3 TDs that has led the Knights to the halftime lead.

C-USA Football under national spotlight

by @ 7:27 pm. Filed under C-USA Football

Conference USA football is under the national spotlight for the next two nights as ESPN2 will air two C-USA football games in the next two nights. Kicking off on Tuesday night @ 8 pm is Marshall @ Memphis, a match-up of two teams who are struggling badly. Marshall is looking for their first win of the season and Memphis looks to defend their home turf and pickup a second win of the season.

On Wednesday night at 8 pm on ESPN2 Rice travels to Southern Miss in a game that does not appear on paper to be much of a test for the Golden Eagles. Rice comes in 0-4 with losses to 3 in-state Texas teams from the Big XII and a Division I-AA school. Southern Miss is coming off a loss @ Boise State last week, but should take care of business as the Golden Eagles will look to improve to 2-0 in the 2007 Conference USA football standings.

Southern Miss @ Boise State tonight

by @ 7:17 pm. Filed under C-USA Football

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles have kicked off with Boise State on the “smurf turf” from Boise, Idaho, and the Golden Eagles have not started off well. Boise State took the opening kickoff to near mid-field and just a few plays later were in the end zone for a 7-0 early lead.

Boise State comes into the game 2-1 on the season and 15-1 over the past two seasons. Southern Miss, a staple of consistency in Conference USA @ Southern Miss, has been as USM for 17 years.

Conference USA Football Round-Up for Week #1

by @ 10:23 am. Filed under C-USA Football

As Tulsa began the first weekend of football for Conference USA teams on a positive note, the tough out-of-conference games took their toll on Tulsa’s C-USA mates on Saturday. While East Carolina gave #9 Virginia Tech all they could handle on a emotional day in Blacksburg, the Pirates fell 17-7 in the end. UAB’s travels to face Michigan State were quite disappointing thanks to a 55-18 thumping by the Spartans, and Marshall’s visit to Miami and subsequent 31-3 loss was not what Thundering Herd fans were hoping for. Houston had high, but reasonable hopes, heading into a match-up @ Oregon, and while they trailed just 20-17 at the half, Oregon’s offense could not be stopped in a 48-27 loss. After a terrible 2006 campaign, Memphis fans should feel better about their team after a narrow 23-21 loss to Mississippi, but Rice’s loss to Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) member Nicholls State must have brought back memories of Rice from just a few short years ago.

The highlights for C-USA football programs came as the night wore on; UCF’s 25-point 1st half proved to be enough, barely, to fend off the NC State Wolfpack 25-23 and Southern Miss easily handled Tennessee-Martin, another Football Championship Subdivision member, by a score of 35-13. In the nightcap, UTEP and New Mexico had a defensive battle in a game that the Miners held on to win 10-6.

In then 10 games played thus far, C-USA team have picked up 4 wins (Southern Miss, UCF, Tulsa & UTEP) with SMU facing Textas Tech later today.
