For the Houston Cougars it has been a long and disappointing season. In a season that featured a brutal out of conference schedule and surprising losses to VCU, South Alabama, St. Louis and more, Cougar fans had to be a little disappointed. But some of the disappointment has disappeared as the Cougars (18-14) have knocked off #6 Southern Miss and #7 Rice on consecutive nights to advance to the Conference USA Basketball Tournament Championship Game. A win on Saturday would turn a disappointing season into a huge success; a loss could mean the end of the line for the 2007 Houston Cougars.
The Memphis Tigers, the defending Champions of Conference USA, are headed back to the C-USA Tournament Championship Game. The Tigers continued to mow down C-USA competition as they outscored #4 seed Tulane 41-22 in the first half en route to a 71-49 win in the Conference USA Basketball Tournament Semifinals today. With the win, the Tigers advance to Saturday’s C-USA Championship game looking for their 2nd consecutive Tournament Championship.
In the final C-USA Basketball Tourney Quarterfinal game of the night, the #4 seeded Tulane Green Wave defeated the #5 seed Tulsa Golden Hurricane 58-56. Tulane (17-12) jumped out to a 31-23 lead at the half and survived a Tulsa (20-11) second half run to hang on for the win. Both teams featured balanced scoring attacks as 9 players from each team scored in the game led by Tulane’s Kevin Sims with 15. With the win, Tulane advances in the C-USA Basketball Tournament to face #1 seed memphis at 6 pm on Friday night.
