The 2006 Conference USA baseball tournament kicked-off its first round action today. A day which saw two higher seeds get beat. Below is a small review of today’s action.
(3) Tulane 2, (6) ECU 4
The day started with ECU upsetting Tulane 4-2. The game was knotted up at two in the fifth until Pirates catcher Jake Smith hit a two run homerun. Pirates starter Brody Taylor picked up the win pitching seven strong innings.
(2) Houston 9, (7) Marshall 1
In the second game Houston banged out 13 hits to win easily over the Thundering Herd 9-1. Cougars leftfielder Jake Stewart had three hits while both Brad Lincoln and Isa Garcia added two hits. Ricky Hargrove picked up the win for the 14 ranked Cougars.
(1) Rice 9, (8) UAB 3
The top seed Owl’s tallied 10 hits in a 9-3 win over the UAB Blazers. Adam Zornes went 3 for 4 for the Owl’s while Eddie Degerman picked up the win.
(4) Memphis 2, (5) Southern Miss 6
The Eagles took a 6-2 win over the Memphis Tigers in the late game. Southern Miss used 14 hits and superb pitching from Barry Bowden to pick up the victory. Toddric Johnson and Trey Sutten lead the Eagles in hitting with three apiece.
