This weekend marks the end of the regular season, and for some the chance to end on a high-mark entering the conference tournament. Three teams (Southern Miss, ECU, Memphis) sit tied for fourth place in conference at 10-11. Unfortunately, two of these teams meet this weekend with East Carolina traveling to play Memphis. Southern Miss holds their own destiny as they welcome a struggling UCF team into Hattiesburg. Tulane travels to UAB and needs only one win to secure third place in conference. Below are this weekends match-ups:
East Carolina (32-20, 10-11) @ Memphis (27-25, 10-11)
Rice (42-10, 19-2) @ Marshall (22-27, 6-15)
Tulane (37-16, 13-8) @ UAB (18-34, 5-16)
UCF (23-30, 5-16) @ Southern Miss (34-19, 10-11)
As I stated in the preview post last week it’s not a smart idea to count out Memphis or ECU, that one of the them could sweep their series, and with a little help get back in contention for a higher finish. Well…I didn’t know that both teams would step up and get it done, plus it helped that Southern Miss stumbled in three straight games against Tulane in which all three games were decided by one run. In other action Rice took their series against the Houston Cougars two games to one. With the series victory Rice takes their first Conference USA Regular Season Championship.
But as the title says, the season is not over yet. We still have one more weekend to go in deciding everyone’s finishing order. Below are the game-by-game results from this past weekend.
Southern Miss v. Tulane
Game 1: 1-2
Game 2: 9-10
Game 3: 4-5
Memphis v. UCF
Game 1: 20-4
Game 2: 10-4
Game 3: 11-3
UAB v. ECU
Game 1: 7-11
Game 2: 1-13
Game 3: 2-12
Rice v. Houston
Game 1: 0-3
Game 2: 7-4
Game 3: 14-3
This weekend will see the top four teams in Conference USA square off, in what could determine the final finishing order in Conference USA. To make the situation even better, all four teams come into their series against each other red hot and ranked in most national polls. The top two teams, Rice and Houston, square off for the #1 spot. Houston will need to play their best, as a sweep could tie them for the Conference USA Championship.
Then there is a two team race for third place between Tulane and Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles will travel to battle rival Tulane this weekend, which could determine third position in Conference. But don’t count out Memphis or ECU. There are still scenario’s were they can finish above either Southern Miss or Tulane. Below are the match-ups for this weekend.
Southern Miss (34-16, 10-8) @ Tulane (34-16, 10-8)
Memphis (24-24, 7-11) @ UCF (23-27, 5-13)
UAB (18-31, 5-13) @ ECU (28-20, 7-11)
Houston (34-17, 17-4) @ Rice (39-9, 17-1)
