There is no doubt of which weekend series should be highlighted. It is the battle between the two teams picked to finish #1 and #2 in conference USA at seasons end; Rice and Tulane. Rice comes into the game with an overall record of 21-8, including a 2-1 record in conference play. Tulane enters the series at 18-9, tied with Rice in conference with a 2-1 record.
This weekend is huge for the momentum of both teams and (could) help to determine the champion at seasons end, either way it should be a heck of a series. The fact that both teams are highly ranked, and loaded with talent should be enough, but no we have the element of revenge as well. The two teams squared off last year in the super regional of the NCAA tournament with Tulane taking two out of the three and advancing to the World Series.
What to watch for: Pitching
The most interesting match-up will be the battle of the pitching and which staff will excel.
Friday’s game will be broadcasted live on CSTV at 6:30 (central).
Today starts the second weekend of conference play. Some teams will look to remain perfect, others will try to pick improve on their first weeks performances. Southern Miss and Houston go into this weekend hoping to remain at the top of the conference as Southern Miss (3-0) hosts Memphis (1-2), while Houston (3-0) travels to East Carolina (1-2). Also, both Marshall (0-3) and UCF (0-0) hope to pick up their first conference wins of an the year, with the Herd hosting the Knights for the weekend series. UAB takes a week off from conference play, as the Blazers travel to play Louisiana Tech.
The first weekend of Conference play began this past weekend as eight out of the nine teams were in action against each other. Some teams shined and others looked as if it could be a long season in C-USA play. UCF was the only team that did not open up conference play as they took 2 out of 3 from former conference foe TCU. Below are the results from each series.

Furthermore, three Conference USA teams remain nationally ranked heading into conference play this weekend including Rice, Tulane and Southern Mississippi; not to mention that East Carolina could join this list with a good series against Rice. Below are the records for the teams headed into this weekends play.

2. Rice 18-6
3. East Carolina 16-6
4. UAB 13-7

On Thursday eight teams took the court to see who would advance in the 2006 Conference USA Tournament, by days end the top seeded teams had proven that they were still the top dogs. Below is a small description of the action from each game.
(2) UAB 69 (10) SMU 55
UAB looked to solidify their position in the NCAA Tournament with a strong showing in the C-USA tournament, and did so in the quaterfinals yesterday afternoon. The Blazers put pressure early and often on SMU forcing 26 turnovers that lead to an additional 27 points. Four Blazers scored in double digits including Lawrence Kinnard (12), Richard Jones (12), Paul Delaney (11) and Marvett McDonald (11). SMU, who advanced with a 61-59 win over Rice, was lead by Bryan Hopkins with 13 points.
(3) UTEP 66 (11) Southern Miss 47
The UTEP Miners moved on to the round of four with a win over the Golden Eagles. The Miners (20-8) are aware that they must win their way into the NCAA Tournament and so far are on the right track with another tournament win. The Miners held the Eagles to 39% shooting, including two periods longer than 5 minutes where the Eagles felled to convert a shot. UTEP shot 50% for the game lead by Jason Williams (14), Edgar Moreno (13) and Miguel Ayala (10). The Eagles were lead by Mildon Ambres with 8 points.
(1) Memphis 75 (8) Tulane 56
Memphis looks to dismiss all doubters of the reason why they should be a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and winning the C-USA Tournament could help those chances. Memphis used the three ball to perfection, hitting 11 from behind the arc which put Tulane behind quickly. The Green Wave could never recover from 20 turnovers as Memphis lead by as much as 30 points in the first half. Tulane was able to cut the lead to under 20 due to the Tigers playing reserves throughout the second half. Memphis was lead in scoring by Rodney Carney (18), Darius Washington (15) and Shawne Williams (13). Tulane did have impressive games from Chris Moore (21) and Quincy Davis (19).
(4) Houston 71 (5) UCF 52
Houston (20-8), much like UTEP, must win the C-USA Tournament to advance to the big dance. Houston jumped up early on the Knights and never looked back, leading 32-19 at the half. The Cougars took care of the ball only committing three turnovers in the game, plus hitting 6 from behind the arc. UCF could never find the touch that helped them to get to the second round, only hitting one of the seven threes attempted. Houston was lead in scoring by Oliver Lafayette (19), Lanny Smith (13) and Jahmar Thorpe (11). Josh Peppers had 15 points for the Knights.
Today’s Semifinal Matchups:
(4) Houston v. (1) Memphis
(3) UTEP v. (2) UAB

I know my usual posts are on Conference USA baseball, but after watching UAB smoke #3 Memphis I was impelled to post an article in reference to the team and the game. First of all the team showed tremendous heart in this game. The team was well aware that they needed this win to get into the tournament, which in my opinion is a shame considering a 20-5 team could be left out (of course I’m a little bias being a C-USA fan), plus may I remind you that it was only last year that C-USA was one of the top Conferences in basketball before the defection of a few teams. Furthermore…UAB has had three straight 20 win seasons and made the sweet 16 two years ago, so how can you not vote this team in, along with Memphis, to represent C-USA in the NCAA Tournament.
Now the game was a seesaw battle with the two teams trading blows but in the end it was turnovers that made the difference. UAB pressured and out hustled the Tigers throughout the game resulting in a young Memphis team making mental errors in taking bad shots and passes.
With this said, I look forward to watching both these teams represent our conference well in March, plus UTEP and Houston in the NIT.
UAB Assistant Coach Matt Zimmerman has found a new way to communicate with his Blazer and Conference USA fans, through the art of Blogging. In his blog, Blazin’ the Trial, Coach Zimmerman discuses the 2005-2006 season, and gives an on the court/in-the-lockeroom report of the action as UAB pushes to make the NCAA tournament. His recent post highlights their road victory over SMU and how Marvett McDonald burned the net with 39 points. Zimmerman will continue to Blog for the remainder of the season, even up till the national championship game.
The Blog is being provided to us through al.com and can be accessed at www.al.com/uabbasketball/trail/?aboutauthor. I have posted the link under C-USA related links. It should be an interesting site to read, especially leading up to the UAB and Memphis battle this Thursday. In my opinion, UAB (20-5) have had a season worthy of making it into the NCAA tournament, but will the selection committee feel the same way? This Thursday night will be the real deciding factor. If UAB can upset #3 Memphis I believe they will have insured their place in the NCAA tournament.
