SPORTS ADDICT: The real reason OU beat BU in
WACO, Texas – I have never in my life seen as much unsportsmanlike conduct by a team as was exhibited by the Oklahoma Sooners against the Baylor Bears on Tuesday evening, Feb. 19 in Norman, Okla.
On top of that, I honestly don’t think I have a seen a more one-sided officiated game as called by the Big 12 trio of Steve Welmer, Mark Whitehead and Curtis Shaw.
In my opinion, those three should be fined, fired and never allowed to officiate another game as long as they live.
Yes, the Bears may have now lost four straight.
But at least they can say they didn’t cheat to get to where they are today.
And, they literally did everything in their power to make it a game on Tuesday night on the road – forcing overtime before a ridiculous call came against Baylor’s Aaron Bruce with 7.3 seconds left in OT after a made three-pointer by OU gave the Sooners a chance to take the lead at the free throw line.
First of all, Bruce never touched the
Secondly, the “fight” that occurred earlier in the game was started – no doubt about it – by
Yet two Baylor players – Mark Shepherd, who left with a laceration above his eye and trouble breathing after being put in a full-nelson by Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin prior to throwing an elbow in Griffin’s direction to get the OU forward to let him go, and Richard Hurd, who apparently was tossed for standing up for his teammate, were ejected after the skirmish with just one, an ASSISTANT COACH, being ejected for OU.
Unbelievable.
In addition, the Bears were whistled for 33 fouls compared to 23 fouls called on the Sooners – with OU outscoring BU at the charity stripe 28-17 (37 attempts for Oklahoma, 23 attempts for Baylor).
For those looking at the final box score for Oklahoma’s win over Baylor, they will find the sheet full of lies – two BU players were tossed from the game for so-called flagrant fouls while no OU players were ejected (the “official” box score has no Baylor players ejected, but those watching the game on television know that is not the case).
The NCAA needs to be held accountable for these actions.
First, their officials call an awful game – through the first half, second half and especially in overtime.
Secondly, it appears to me as though the NCAA now wants to cover this whole thing up by not mentioning anything about this incident in the official box score.
Also, the officials REVIEWED the skirmish before ejecting the two BU players – did they just decided to ignore what they saw and only punish Baylor?
Either way, it’s unreal and unfair.
The Big 12 and the NCAA need to look into this matter – and fast.
Baylor shouldn’t have lost in OU – and Sooner fans can say all they want about Curtis Jerrells being whistled for a foul in the lane with one second left and a chance to win the game for BU.
It never should have come down to that.

Bruce never fouled the OU shooter on the other end and the game should have been tied at 91; we should have played another five minutes of overtime.
Instead, the officials handed the Sooners a 92-91 Big 12 win – propelling the
Let’s even go back towards the beginning of the game, when
Have you ever, in your entire life of watching college hoops, seen a teammate showboat by tossing the ball off the glass as an “alley-oop” of sorts to setup a thunderous slam?
In my opinion, definitely should have been whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The sad thing is that not only was it not called unsportsmanlike, but OU head coach Jeff Capel appears to applaud the unsportsmanlike play of his players.
I guess that shouldn’t surprise me coming from Capel, a guy who loves to think of himself as a mini-god in college hoops…
Grow up, Capel – learn to win the right way, not by showboating and cheating.
The
And if any wrongdoings are uncovered, they should all be severely punished.
The Bears are back in NCAA basketball, I guarantee you.
It’s just impossible to win games if the officials are going to cheat the entire time – from the opening tip to the 7.3-second mark in overtime.
Coach Scott Drew and the Baylor Bears basketball team deserve an apology and a win.
Unfortunately, I doubt they will receive either as the NCAA would rather pretend this never occurred than to actually do something about their terrible officiating crew.
If this is how Baylor games are going to be called the rest of the season, we’ll never win again.
But I’m not about to watch my Bears go down in flames due to cheating.
Wake up, NCAA – Baylor deserves, at the very least, sportsmanlike respect.
And, OU better get their heads out of their exits-only before they become so wrapped up in themselves that they think the world has come to an end and that they are all little deities led by mini-god Capel…
No matter how you slice it, the Sooners are a stuck-up bunch of jerks – and you can tell they learned it from the man at the helm, none other than Mr. Capel himself.
I just can’t wait until my Bears get revenge come Big 12 tourney time.
My only hope, and prayer, is that the same officiating crew won’t be hitting the hardwood come March…

Seriously?
Thats just about all I can say, Seriously?
You got beat dude, pure and simple, and here you are throwing a fit about it. Man up, strap on a set, and move on to next week. Its not cheating to win a basketball game, its playing basketball, there is a difference, and its one that you would be well to recognize. Please do so.

Did you even watch the game? Are Baylor fans really going the way of OSU and TT?
First, Shepherd got the lasceration above his eye well before that play. He was not having trouble breathing- that’s absurd. Griffin was entangled w/him and NEVER had him in a head lock. Shepherd was a punk and threw an unnecessary elbow. Griffin reacted by jumping towards him an got a technical. Shepherd got a flagrant foul which in an automatic ejection. The second player got ejected for leaving the bench, just like Darby Rich, OU’s strength coach. According to NCAA rules that is an automatic ejection.
Next, I’m having a hard time not calling you a moron, the free throw disparity is pretty easy to explain. OU’s game is inside where most fouls are called. Diene, Shepherd and the other stiffs Baylor threw out there could not hang with him so they fouled out. Baylor has no inside game, and thus gets fewer calls. When they did drive they got to the line. It’s reall simple. Not to mention that your Bears were fouling in the last 3 minutes of regulation on purpose to extend the game. It was a good strategy and it worked. Also, they were playing guards on him at times and they had no choice but to foul.
Third, you’re an idiot. EVERY coach in the country worth anything at all has asked the crowd to get louder in those situations. He didn’t ask the crowd to cheer the miss, he was geting them louder to affect Jerrell’s next shot- and it worked!
No foul on Bruce? Really? Did you just not see him hit Crocker’s left arm? On the double clutch, Bruce hit his off arm which is a foul.
Finally, there is nothing classless about Jeff Capel. He is always complementary of OU’s opponents. He’s never received a technical at OU, though some of us think he should every once in a while. The bounce off the backboard was a FUN play. No different than an alley-oop. So far this year I’ve seen Memphis, Texas, Tennessee, Indiana (where I have season tickets) and UConn all do either the exact same thing or something very similar, and I’m guessing there are other teams too. I guess the give and go slam from Longar to Blake was classless because he could have just laid it in.
If that was all so classless and full of cheating, why did Baylor not complain? In fact, your coach said they were hoping he’d get drafted at halftime because that was the only way to stop him. Also notice that none of the Baylor coaches complained after the ejections. Not one. They might know a little bit more about it than you.
Oh well, guess you have football to get revenge, right???

Did you not see Bruce’s reaction after the foul call? Not the reaction of a guy who didn’t commit a foul. He acted like he was pissed at himself for doing it. If you don’t think there was contact watch the replay again and quit whining about it. Jerrells choked on two free throws, you lost. GET OVER IT.

Just to step in and defend Denton, as a unbiased observer watching the replay several times over this morning on SportsCenter and ESPN FirstTake, the Bruce foul looked pretty ticky-tack. There was no advantage gained by Bruce in the contact and the contact DID NOT affect the shot. His body was in an awkward position which made the entire scene rather difficult, however there was no clear foul action by Bruce.

That having been said, if you make your free throws OR the tip-in with 1 second left, then we would not be having this discussion.

I agree with the second comment by “Big 12 Fans”. The officials did not hand the Sooners a 92-91 win. By missing two free throws with one second left in overtime Curtis Jerrells did.
I highly doubt if he would have converted that you would be going on your rant about the officials and how they should be fired. Only when you lose a game you “should have won” does the venom flow. I understand it and I appreciate your passion for your team. Bottom line is you had EVERY opportunity to win the game and Jerrells (as good as he is) blew it at the end.
thank you…

undercutting a shooter as he is landing from a 3 pointer is a foul.
the rest of your article is just silly. and yes, I have seen players dunking off of a backboard toss many times. not that it matters, but how is that unsportsmanlike conduct?

The writer of this article should never be allowed to write again. If you defend this type of writing on your site then don’t expect to have many people visiting, except perhaps complete Baylor Bear homers.
The only reason I came here was to witness this travesty first hand. Is this how you encourage your stringers to contribute? Try finding someone with a basketball IQ higher than the BU fouls per game.

I do encourage fans to write for our site. This may not be the most positive of comments, I have certainly had to delete several rude things directed at Denton, but I love the passion of fans of college sports, and had the tables been turned it may be different. I have seen this kind of game on both side in my years of being a fan, writer, administrator and more and I will never discourage fans from being fans. That i the whole point of our site anyway - Big12-FANS.com which is the owner of this blog’s content.

BTW - We are looking for an OU Correspondent if anyone is interested…

This article is not even worthy of more time than I have wasted reading it. I am writing this comment just to convey the fact that every radical point the author makes has an actual reason behind it as some people have mentioned above. Nobody cheated; if they did the Baylor team would be going crazy right now and there would be a story on ESPN. Call it what you want, but every game has fouls that go both ways and both teams are upset about. The author is just an upset Baylor fan who after an amazing game came out on the wrong end. The way to vent that frustration though is not to call the opposing team and coach classless and make comments as to why they are bad people and supposedly have huge egos. I find it hard to believe that you even watch basketball due to your criticism of the off the back board dunk, I have seen that a million times with so many other teams, big dunks and plays are part of the game, open your eyes and you would see that.
Also watch the highlight of the three point shot Tony Crocker took in overtime and look at Bruce’s reaction right as the whistle is blown, he hunches over in a ‘I cant believe I fouled him’ stance, not with his arms out to the side like he had no idea where the call came from. How could that play even make you think that the game was set? If it was set up it wouldn’t have come down to overtime and defiantly not down to 7.3 seconds and then again at 1 second on the clock. You win some you lose some, and as I recall Baylor did beat A&M at their house in five overtimes which was the greatest game so far this season. Take a few days and relax there will be more games, more chances for your team to come out on top, but seriously targeting a coach and players is the wrong way to do it after all they did was play as hard as they could.
